Amtrak is building new Airo trains around the nation with “world-class accommodations” to meet a “soaring demand for train travel,” the company announced Thursday.
“Offering a more sustainable way to travel and featuring a modern design with world-class amenities, Amtrak Airo will transform the travel experience,” a press release from the company stated. “The new trains will elevate the journey with a focus on comfort and efficiency, providing even more advantages to traveling by rail.”
According to the statement, the new trains will be more fuel efficient and produce 90% less particulate emissions in diesel operations.
The first Amtrak Airo train is scheduled to debut in 2026 to customers on the following routes:
U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) said in the statement that the expansion is due to an injection of billions of dollars via the Biden Administration’s infrastructure law.
The new trains can operate at speeds of up to 125 miles per hour, according to the statement, and provide “spacious interiors, panoramic windows, plenty of legroom, double and single seats, dedicated outlets, USB ports and onboard Wi-Fi.”
Currently, Amtrak has “more than” 30 train routes throughout the U.S., and some in Canada. Amtrak travels to over 500 destinations in 46 states.
