Baltimore’s airport won a top honor in a national contest for something you might not expect.Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport was the only airport among the finalists in the 2023 America’s Best Restroom contest. Other finalists included highway rest areas, restaurants, tourist destinations and private companies.The 22nd annual contest, sponsored by Cintas Corp., celebrates businesses that develop and maintain innovative restroom facilities, according to a statement released by the airport.Prizes include a Cintas UltraClean restroom cleaning service and $2,500 in Cintas products and services for restroom cleaning or facility management.The airport’s new restrooms on Concourse B opened in the spring as part of a broad program to modernize and enhance restroom facilities throughout the terminal. The $55 million program is expanding and improving restrooms on Concourses B, C and D.”We’re honored to be recognized by Cintas and contest voters for our commitment to providing a positive passenger experience and outstanding facilities,” Ricky Smith, the airport’s executive director and CEO, said in a statement. “Passengers rank restrooms as an airport’s No. 1 amenity. That’s why we work so hard to provide creative, clean and inviting restrooms to make travel more enjoyable.”Customer amenities at the airport’s new restrooms include added space for stowing roller bags, along with full-height stalls and doors.The new restrooms’ technology includes occupancy lights for the stalls and sensors to inform custodial staff when supplies need to be refilled.”The state of their public restroom can have large impact on the public’s perception of a business,” Julia Walsh, marketing manager for Cintas, said in a statement. “The BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport restrooms are bright and airy and the embodiment of clean, with natural light and room for luggage. We’re proud to crown them as America’s Best Restroom.”Last year, the Tampa International Airport won the top prize for its high-design, spacious restrooms, coupled with quality craftsmanship and an inviting yet durable material palette.
