What Happened To British Airways' London Stansted Flights?

Operated by its subsidiary BA CityFlyer, the routes were primarily weekend-only, catering to travelers seeking a quick getaway. The introduction of these routes was met with enthusiasm, as it provided convenient options for passengers in the east of England and London’s surrounding areas.

Scaling back in 2018

Fast forward to 2018, and British Airways’ approach at London Stansted had changed. The airline’s subsidiary, BA CityFlyer, had initially introduced seasonal weekend routes from Stansted due to the closure of London City Airport during parts of the weekend. This inventive solution allowed the airline to utilize its fleet of Embraer aircraft more effectively. However, signs of scaling back were evident as some routes were canceled, and others saw a reduction in frequency.

Routes to destinations such as Berlin Tegel, Florence, Ibiza, Milan, and Palma experienced modifications. Some routes were temporarily suspended, while others were limited to specific days of the week. These changes reflected the airline’s strategic adjustments to match demand and optimize its operations. Despite the scaling back, routes to popular vacation spots like Faro, Malaga, and Nice retained their frequency, signaling the importance of these destinations in British Airways’ portfolio.

2023: A new direction

As the calendar flipped to 2023, British Airways took yet another turn in its journey at London Stansted. British is largely out of London Stansted at this point, although BA CityFlyer announced a partnership with Corsican Places this year. From May to October, a weekly Sunday service between Stansted and Calvi is being operated, offering travelers a connection to the island of Corsica.

The collaboration with Corsican Places allowed British Airways to offer holiday packages encompassing flights, transfers, or car hire. This approach aimed to enhance the travel experience for customers and tap into the growing demand for packaged vacations.

Evolution and adaptation
