Liam Cunningham has offered some fresh insights into his 3 Body Problem character, which sees him reunited with Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Based on the novel of the same name by Chinese science fiction author Liu Cixin, 3 Body Problem serves as Benioff and Weiss’ most anticipated Netflix release since they signed an exclusive development deal with the streaming giant back in 2019. In addition to reteaming with Cunningham, who is best known for playing Ser Davos Seaworth in Game of Thrones, Netflix’s 3 Body Problem will also feature Samwell Tarly’s John Bradley and the High Sparrow’s Jonathan Pryce.
Speaking with Variety, Cunningham provided some information about his latest character, who he described as a very different type of character than that of Ser Davos. Explaining that while his Game of Thrones character was often “seen as a soft moral compass”, his 3 Body Problem character Mr. Wade is going to come as a shock for viewers who think he only plays one type of role. Check out his comments below:
He’s an extraordinary individual. It’s been a long time since I’ve played anything close to this guy. I suppose the irony is what they [Benioff and Weiss] wanted me to do was nothing like what they wanted me to do in “Game of Thrones.” He [Seaworth] was seen as a soft moral compass kind of character in “Game of Thrones” — that’s not Wade. He’s going to be a bit of a shock for people who think I play one kind of character, shall we say?
He’s a bit of a handful is Mr. Wade. And he’s involved in the intelligence community. It’s very much grounded in theoretical physics and quantum entanglement and all sorts of scientific pursuits. However, there are those people that we come across at the beginning of the show, [that] come into the circle of Mr. Wade’s business, which are most definitely not scientific.
Will Benioff & Weiss’ 3 Body Problem Out Perform Game of Thrones?
The profound impact that Benioff and Weiss have had on the modern television landscape should not be understated. Despite criticisms levelled at the pair regarding Game of Thrones’ less-than-stellar final season, the show still stands as one of the most successful television dramas ever made. Repeatedly pulling in record viewership numbers and generating a slew of award nominations, Benioff and Weiss’s efforts set the bar for the many prestige series to follow.
With the English translation of Cixin’s original novel and its two sequels earning considerable praise and serving to popularize Chinese science fiction to English-speaking audiences, the property seems like an intriguing fit for the former Game of Thrones showrunners. Able to cite the likes of George R.R. Martin and former U.S. President Barack Obama among the many outspoken supporters of the original books, Netflix’s 3 Body Problem has both the source material and potential appeal to become another major hit for the pair.
Moreover, with all three books in Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy already written, Benioff and Weiss will potentially be able to avoid the same problems they faced completing Game of Thrones without Martin’s own ending. Only time will tell if 3 Body Problem will prove a bigger success story than their previous fantasy series, but it does have the potential to deliver something truly memorable.
