Santa Cruz Boardwalk could bring back the Ferris wheel

The city of Santa Cruz is set to discuss permits for a new Ferris wheel at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.The new Ferris wheel, which has the proposed name of the Chance Wheel, will replace the Rock & Roll ride. It will take up approximately 2,200 square feet and will have 15 gondolas that can seat four adults or six children at a time.The previous Ferris wheel that was removed in 2017 was 67 feet tall. The Chance Wheel is currently proposed to be 68 feet tall.According to the Santa Cruz Seaside Company, the boardwalk has had a long history with Ferris wheels dating back to 1925.“It blends in with the scale of other rides and buildings at the Boardwalk and will not block any public views of the Giant Dipper, the ocean, or the Santa Cruz Mountains,” states the agenda item.The planning commission had the item on their agenda for their meeting on Aug. 3 but had to push the item to their next meeting on Aug. 17.
